Roussanne Wines

What is Roussanne

Roussanne is a white grape variety that originated in the Northern Rhône Valley in France. Its name comes from the French word roux, referring to the reddish brown colour the grapes develop as they ripen. It is a demanding grape to grow, with late ripening and susceptibility to disease, but in the right hands it produces some of the most rewarding white wines of southern France.

Roussanne and Marsanne

Roussanne is most commonly blended with Marsanne, particularly in appellations such as Hermitage, Crozes Hermitage and Saint Joseph. In these blends, Roussanne contributes aroma, acidity and finesse, while Marsanne adds body and weight. In Châteauneuf du Pape blanc, Roussanne can dominate the blend and is often the backbone of the wine, sometimes accounting for the majority of the final composition.

Flavour profile of Roussanne

Roussanne typically shows aromas of pear, apple, apricot and white peach, often layered with floral notes, herbs and honey. With age, it can develop more complex flavours of nuts, dried fruit and gentle spice. The wines are usually medium to full bodied, with a rounded texture and moderate acidity, making them both expressive and satisfying.

Where Roussanne is grown

While the Rhône remains the spiritual home of Roussanne, the grape has found success in other warm climate regions. Southern France and the Languedoc produce excellent examples, often offering great value. Roussanne is also grown in small quantities in Australia and the United States, particularly in California, where it is sometimes bottled as a single varietal wine.

Ageing potential

High quality Roussanne based wines are known for their ability to age gracefully. Over time, the fresh fruit character evolves into deeper, more savoury notes while retaining balance and structure. This ageing potential makes Roussanne a favourite among enthusiasts who enjoy exploring how white wines develop in bottle.

Food pairing with Roussanne

Roussanne’s richness and texture make it a versatile partner at the table. It works well with roast chicken, pork, creamy sauces and richer fish dishes. Its aromatic profile also pairs nicely with Mediterranean cuisine, grilled vegetables and lightly spiced dishes.

FAQs

Is Roussanne always blended?

No. While commonly blended with Marsanne, Roussanne is sometimes bottled on its own, especially outside the Rhône.

Is Roussanne a heavy white wine?
Roussanne is fuller bodied than many white wines, but good examples retain balance and freshness rather than feeling heavy.

Does Roussanne age well?
Yes. Well made Roussanne based wines can age for many years, gaining complexity and depth over time.

What makes Roussanne different from Marsanne?
Roussanne is more aromatic and refined, while Marsanne adds body and weight to the blend.
