Semillon Wines

What is Semillon

Semillon is a thin skinned white grape variety known for its adaptability and broad stylistic range. It can produce fresh, dry wines, richly textured blends or intensely sweet dessert wines depending on climate, harvest timing and winemaking approach. While often blended, Semillon also shines as a single variety in the right conditions.

Semillon in France

France is Semillon’s spiritual home, particularly Bordeaux. In dry white Bordeaux, it is commonly blended with Sauvignon Blanc to add weight, softness and texture. In sweet wine regions such as Sauternes and Barsac, Semillon dominates the blend and thrives under noble rot, creating some of the most complex and long lived dessert wines in the world, with flavours of honey, apricot and marmalade.

New World expressions of Semillon

Outside France, Semillon has found notable success in Australia, especially the Hunter Valley. Here it produces uniquely dry, low alcohol wines with high acidity that can age beautifully, developing toast, lanolin and nutty complexity over time. Chile and South Africa also produce excellent Semillon, often balancing ripe fruit with freshness and subtle texture.

Flavour profile and texture

Young Semillon often shows flavours of lemon, apple and pear, sometimes with a waxy or lightly oily texture. With age, it develops richer notes of honey, toast, nuts and dried fruit. Sweet styles display intense concentration while maintaining balance through natural acidity.

Food pairing and drinking style

Dry Semillon works well with seafood, roast chicken, creamy sauces and dishes where texture matters as much as freshness. Sweet Semillon based wines are classic matches for blue cheese, fruit desserts or simply enjoyed on their own. Many Semillon wines reward patience, improving significantly with bottle age.

FAQs

Is Semillon always sweet?
No. Semillon can be bone dry, medium bodied or intensely sweet depending on how and where it is made.

Why is Semillon blended with Sauvignon Blanc?
Semillon adds weight, softness and texture, while Sauvignon Blanc contributes acidity and aromatics, creating a balanced wine.

Can Semillon age well?
Yes. Both dry and sweet styles of Semillon can age exceptionally well, developing complex secondary flavours over time.

What does noble rot do to Semillon?
Noble rot concentrates sugars and flavours, producing rich dessert wines with honeyed, dried fruit character and remarkable longevity.
