  • Food pairing: Les Six has wine has a natural affinity with chicken and lamb dishes; a rack of lamb roasted with a herb crust - especially those herbs found growing wild in the southern Rhône such as thyme, rosemary, oregano, marjoram and sage – is a perfect match. Vegetables roasted with these herbs would work well too, as would more robustly flavoured vegetarian dishes such as a mushroom and lentil cottage pie.

Syrah Wines

What is Syrah

Syrah is a noble red grape variety originating in France’s Rhône Valley. It is prized for producing wines with structure, freshness and complex savoury character. Compared to Shiraz, Syrah is often more restrained, showing pepper, olive, dark fruit and mineral notes rather than overt ripeness.

Syrah vs Shiraz

Syrah and Shiraz are the same grape, but the name often reflects style and origin. Syrah is typically used for wines from France and cooler climates, where elegance, spice and structure dominate. Shiraz is more commonly associated with warmer regions, producing richer, fuller bodied wines with softer tannins.

Syrah in the Rhône Valley

The Rhône Valley is Syrah’s spiritual home. In the Northern Rhône, Syrah is the sole red grape in famous appellations such as Hermitage, Côte Rôtie and Crozes Hermitage. These wines are savoury and complex, with flavours of black pepper, violets, dark berries, olive and smoked meat. They are often built to age and develop remarkable depth over time.

Cool climate Syrah worldwide

Outside France, Syrah thrives in cooler regions across the world. South Africa, Chile, parts of Australia and the United States all produce excellent Syrah with freshness and balance. These wines often combine dark fruit with peppery spice, herbal notes and bright acidity.

Flavour profile

Syrah wines typically show black cherry, blackberry and plum alongside savoury notes such as black pepper, olive, liquorice and smoked meat. Oak ageing can add subtle hints of vanilla, spice and toast, but the grape’s natural character remains the focus.

Food pairing

Syrah is a superb food wine. It pairs beautifully with grilled lamb, beef, game, slow cooked stews and dishes with herbs and spice. The structure and acidity also make it a great match for richer sauces and earthy flavours.

FAQs

Is Syrah always full bodied?

Syrah is usually medium to full bodied, but cooler climate examples can feel more refined and elegant rather than powerful.

Does Syrah age well?
Yes. High quality Syrah, particularly from the Rhône Valley, can age gracefully for many years.

What makes Syrah different from Shiraz?
The difference is stylistic rather than genetic. Syrah tends to be more savoury and structured, while Shiraz is often riper and fruit led.

Is Syrah good with food?
Very much so. Its balance of fruit, spice and acidity makes it one of the most versatile red wines at the table.
