Viura Wines

What is Viura?

Viura is a white grape variety native to Spain and is the principal grape used in Rioja Blanco. It is also known as Macabeo, particularly when grown for Cava. Viura is valued for its ability to retain acidity in warm climates while offering flexibility in winemaking, from fresh unoaked styles to more complex barrel matured wines.

Viura flavour profile

Viura wines typically show flavours of green apple, pear, citrus and subtle stone fruit. In younger styles, the wines are clean, crisp and refreshing. When aged in oak or blended with Malvasia, Viura can develop richer textures with notes of honey, almond and gentle spice while maintaining balance and freshness.

Where Viura is grown

Viura is most closely associated with Rioja, where it thrives in the region’s continental climate. It is also widely planted across Spain, particularly in Catalonia where it plays a key role in Cava production. Outside Spain, Viura appears in small plantings under the name Macabeo in southern France.

Styles of Viura wine

Viura is made in several distinct styles. Unoaked versions focus on purity and freshness, making them ideal everyday drinking whites. Oak aged Rioja Blanco styles are more structured and food friendly, offering complexity and ageing potential. In sparkling wine production, Viura contributes freshness, finesse and balance.

Food pairing with Viura

Viura pairs naturally with Spanish cuisine. It works well with seafood, grilled fish, tapas, light poultry dishes and rice based meals. Oak aged styles can handle richer foods such as roast chicken, creamy sauces and mushroom based dishes without losing definition.
