Payten & Jones was founded in 2006 by two school friends Behn & Troy. They claim to have been the only literate students to graduate in 1997 from their school in the Yarra Valley. Behn’s father, Pete is known for managing the first vineyard to be certified organic in Australia. Pete is now fully on hand in the vineyards for both Behn and Troy.

The ‘V.V’ is not, as one might usually expect, the French term for old vines, Vieille Vignes but is the name given to Payten & Jones’ signature series of wines; Valley Vignerons.

Payten & Jones are a winery at the fore-front of Australia’s Natural Wine Movement. They are unpretentious, no-nonsense winemakers practicing organic and sustainable farming, minimal intervention vinification, using natural acid levels, indigenous ‘wild’ yeasts, whole bunch fermentation, spontaneous malolactic conversion and shunning entirely the use of the preservative SO2. All of their wines are unfined and unfiltered, which may show in the wines’ haziness and deliver a touch of sediment. This does not detract from the sheer pleasure of drinking their wines, they are made beautifully ‘as nature intended’ and taste like the grapes we all know and love.

Payten and Jones Valley Vignerons Series Sangiovese is a fruit forward style of Sangiovese, soft and approachable, while still having an amazing structure. Yarra Sangiovese, who would have thought! Whole berries with the ferment, old oak. A New world approach to a classic, perhaps a great gateway drug to get people hooked on those old world styles? Did some one say a big bowl of red sauce?

There’s minimal intervention, a bit of ‘raw’ processes, and nothing filtered or cleaned up in any way. This wine isn’t ‘squeaky clean’, it’s a bit ‘edgy’, even a bit ‘raw’. Always interesting, with a little soul left in. And delicious, always smashable.

Ratings & Awards,

Our wines are a little different

Allegedly the only two (literate) students to Graduate Healesville High School 1997, we were always destined to work together. Behn (the Payten) drove his first Tractor at the age of 5.
Troy (the Jones) was talking by the age of 1 and hasn’t shut up since.

Naturally we fell in with the wrong crowd out here, and became heavily involved in the wine industry.

Behn’s dad Pete knows a thing or two about vineyards. Before his years of working in the Yarra Valley, he managed Australia’s first organic
vineyard and is always focused heavily on sustainability. We knew we were in good hands. The three of us continue to spend regular nights
sharing a glass of Red, solving the world’s problems.

Our wines are a little different – they may be murky in the glass and can sometimes throw a bit of sediment.

They always look better with a bit of air, served neat in a glass (although straws also work), at the right temperature, with fresh food and great company.

The wines are not ‘perfect’ by industry standards, but they have the perfect personality for the situations they’re made for.

Drinking these wines is like experiencing a band live, as opposed to listening to a recorded track.

There’s minimal intervention and doing nothing to a wine is the hardest part of making it.  Always interesting, with a little soul left in.

We've tasted this:

Love all the Payten and Jones wines but I think this Sangiovese is my favourite. Juicy, ripe cherry and cranberry fruit. Lovely acidity, nice weight on the palate. Seriously drinkable.
