Mourvedre Wines

Mourvèdre is a bold red grape best known for producing structured, full flavoured wines with depth and warmth. Traditionally grown in southern France, especially the Rhône and Languedoc, it thrives in hot climates and is often used in blends such as Châteauneuf du Pape. Expect dark fruit, spice and savoury character, with plenty of grip and ageing potential.

Mourvedre Wines

What is Mourvèdre?

Mourvèdre is a thick skinned red grape variety that favours warm, sunny climates and long growing seasons. It is most closely associated with southern France, particularly the Rhône Valley and Languedoc, where it plays a vital role in many classic blends. In Spain it is known as Monastrell, while in Australia it is often labelled as Mataro. Regardless of name, the grape is valued for structure, colour and savoury depth.

Flavour profile and style

Mourvèdre wines are typically full bodied with firm tannins and elevated alcohol. Flavours lean towards dark fruits such as blackberry, blueberry and plum, supported by notes of black pepper, dried herbs, liquorice and earthy spice. With age, Mourvèdre can develop complex savoury characters including leather, game and smoked meat. It is rarely light or fruity and instead appeals to drinkers who enjoy depth and intensity.

Mourvèdre in Rhône blends

In the southern Rhône, Mourvèdre is a key component of GSM blends alongside Grenache and Syrah. While Grenache brings fruit and warmth, and Syrah adds perfume and freshness, Mourvèdre contributes backbone, tannin and savoury complexity. In appellations such as Châteauneuf du Pape, Mourvèdre often plays a crucial supporting role and in some cases can dominate the blend, especially in warmer sites.

Single varietal Mourvèdre wines

Although traditionally blended, Mourvèdre is increasingly bottled as a single varietal. These wines tend to be powerful and expressive, showing the grape’s full character without softening influences. Single varietal examples often come from very warm regions where the grape can fully ripen, resulting in wines that are rich, intense and well suited to ageing.

Growing conditions and winemaking

Mourvèdre ripens late and requires heat to achieve balance, which is why it excels in Mediterranean climates. The grape’s thick skins provide deep colour and tannin, making careful winemaking essential. Oak ageing is common and can help soften the structure while adding spice and complexity. When handled well, Mourvèdre produces wines that are both robust and refined.

Food pairing with Mourvèdre

Mourvèdre wines are highly food friendly, particularly with rich and savoury dishes. They pair well with slow cooked lamb, beef stews, grilled meats and game. Mediterranean flavours such as herbs, olives and tomatoes also work beautifully. The wine’s tannin and weight allow it to stand up to bold flavours without being overwhelmed.

Why choose Mourvèdre?

If you enjoy structured red wines with savoury depth and character, Mourvèdre is an excellent choice. It offers something more serious and complex than many fruit driven styles, while still delivering warmth and generosity. Whether blended or bottled on its own, Mourvèdre showcases the power and personality of southern wine regions.

FAQs

Is Mourvèdre always blended?

No. While it is traditionally used in blends, single varietal Mourvèdre wines are increasingly common and can be very expressive.

Is Mourvèdre the same as Monastrell?
Yes. Mourvèdre is the French name for the grape, while Monastrell is used in Spain and Mataro in Australia.

Are Mourvèdre wines high in alcohol?
They can be. Mourvèdre thrives in warm climates and often produces wines with higher alcohol and firm structure.

Can Mourvèdre wines age well?
Yes. Thanks to high tannin and concentration, good examples of Mourvèdre can age and develop savoury complexity over time.
