Nebbiolo Wines

What is Nebbiolo?

Nebbiolo is a red grape variety native to northern Italy, most closely associated with Piedmont. Despite its pale ruby colour, Nebbiolo produces some of Italy’s most powerful and long lived wines. High natural acidity and tannin give these wines their unmistakable structure, while time in bottle allows them to develop extraordinary complexity.

Nebbiolo flavour profile

Nebbiolo wines are instantly recognisable once you know what to look for. Typical aromas include rose petals, violets, sour cherry and red berry fruit. With age, these develop into savoury notes of dried herbs, leather, truffle and earthy spice. On the palate, Nebbiolo is firm and structured, often demanding food or time to soften its tannins.

Barolo and Barbaresco explained

Barolo and Barbaresco are Nebbiolo’s most famous expressions. Both come from Piedmont, but with subtle differences. Barolo is generally more powerful and tannic, built for long ageing and often described as serious and commanding. Barbaresco tends to be slightly more approachable earlier, with finer tannins and a more elegant profile, while still offering excellent ageing potential.

Growing conditions and challenges

Nebbiolo is notoriously difficult to grow. It buds early and ripens late, requiring specific vineyard sites with good sunlight and well drained soils. Even small changes in climate or site can have a major impact on the final wine. This sensitivity is one reason Nebbiolo reflects terroir so clearly and why top examples are so highly prized.

Nebbiolo beyond Italy

While Piedmont remains Nebbiolo’s spiritual home, the grape has found success elsewhere. Regions with cooler climates and long growing seasons have begun producing impressive Nebbiolo wines that retain the grape’s signature aromatics and structure while offering a slightly different expression. These wines can provide a fascinating alternative to classic Italian styles.

Food pairing with Nebbiolo

Nebbiolo is a food wine at heart. Its high acidity and firm tannins make it an excellent match for rich dishes. Classic pairings include slow cooked beef, lamb, game and dishes featuring mushrooms or truffles. Hard cheeses also work beautifully, as they help soften the wine’s tannic grip.

Why choose Nebbiolo?

Nebbiolo is a grape for drinkers who enjoy depth, structure and complexity. It rewards patience and curiosity, offering wines that evolve dramatically with age and air. Whether you are exploring Barolo for the first time or looking to compare styles from different regions, Nebbiolo delivers character, elegance and a true sense of place.

FAQs

Is Nebbiolo a light or full bodied wine?
Nebbiolo is medium to full bodied, with high tannins and acidity that give it a powerful structure despite its pale colour.

Does Nebbiolo need ageing?
Many Nebbiolo wines benefit from ageing, especially Barolo and Barbaresco, though some modern styles can be enjoyed younger.

Why is Nebbiolo pale in colour?
Nebbiolo grapes have thinner skins than many red varieties, resulting in lighter colour but still delivering strong tannins and flavour.

What food works best with Nebbiolo?
Rich meat dishes, mushroom based recipes and hard cheeses pair particularly well with Nebbiolo’s structure and acidity.
