CHIMAY is the best known and biggest Trappist brewery. The beers set the standard for Trappist beers. First brewed in 1861 Chimay was the first to sell its beers commercially. They also introduced the designation Trappist. Best enjoyed in its distinctive chalice, this is without doubt a Trappist beer of great tradition. Chimay Red Cap is a dark brown colour with a sweet, fruity aroma and nutty character. It imparts a silky sensation to the tongue, made refreshing by a light touch of bitterness.

Ratings & Awards,

Our history began in 1850 when the priest of Virelles, Father Jean-Baptiste Jourdain, and the Prince of Chimay, Joseph de Riquet de Caraman, entrusted a mission to small group of monks from Westvleteren: to take up residence on the high plateau of Scoutmont with the aim, then as now, of “supporting the Chimay region”.

In order to do so, they decided to make beer from the water available in abundance on the marshy plateau.
